The monograph deals with the ties of University of Tartu teaching staff and students with Asia.

The monograph primarily talks about the faculties whose contacts with the Orient were the most systematic and wide-ranging. The main subjects of research are Oriental languages, Oriental history, ethnology and philosophy, religions of the Orient. In addition to the alumni of the University of Tartu, Orientalists from Estonia who had obtained their higher education in other higher education institutions are also discussed.
