Our freedom war admiral was the brave and fearless son of a self-assured Järva peasant. He was quick to act and had a fortunate hand in every venture—whether at sea, in business, on the farm, in the forest, in peace, or in war. When work needed to be done, he rolled up his sleeves and accomplished it, whether he had the required tools in his pockets or not. He particularly excelled in his duties as admiral: during the numerous and daring operations of the War of Independence, not a single ship was lost, with only five naval personnel losing their lives (approximately three times fewer than those who perished in the war games at the Kurkse strait in the fall of 1997). The greatest value to remember about Johan Pitka in this anniversary year is his deeds and conduct—as a model of civic behavior.
