Ants Laikmaa (1866-1942) was one of the cornerstones of Estonian culture and art, whose role as creator, teacher and organizer of artistic life is invaluable. As an artist, pastel paintings set the tone for Laikmaa's work: he created both landscapes and portraits with them. The arrival of Impressionism in Estonian art is also associated with Laikmaa. In the autumn of 1891 he walked from Riga to Düsseldorf, covering more than 2,600 kilometers in six weeks.
Laikmaa studied for a short time in St. Petersburg and a little longer in Düsseldorf, but from 1901 he lived in Estonia again. Two years later, he founded a studio school, which became an important educational institution, and during 20 years nearly 800 people studied there, among them a number of well-known Estonian artists. In Läänemaa, Laikmaa built an artist's house in the national romantic style, which is unique in Estonia, and which currently functions as his house museum.
