The works of the renowned Austrian author Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) include not only psychological novellas but also significant biographical narratives. Very little is known about Magellan, particularly his youth. His exact year and place of birth remain unknown. Based on fragments and scraps preserved on wax paper from various documents, Stefan Zweig reconstructs the early years of his protagonist, illustrating how the Portuguese queen's loyal page grows into an admiral with steadfast beliefs, who, finding no support in his homeland, decides to pursue his idea under a foreign flag. Zweig vividly describes the first circumnavigation of the globe. Although the daring navigator lost his life in the Philippines, his name remains etched in world history, for it was through Magellan that humanity first gained a true understanding of the size of the world.
