Jaan Puhvel (1932), born in Tallinn, studied at J. Westholm high school, left Estonia with his family in 1944. Received education and training in Europe and America, dr. in philos. in comparative linguistics at Harvard in 1959, studying directly with the famous Georges Dumézil, he also studied comparative mythology at the University of California, Los Angeles. This work represents a textbook crystallized from university lectures, which, written in English, has become one of the classic teaching tools in the New World.
