The Danish philosopher and precursor of existentialism, Søren Kierkegaard’s The Sickness Unto Death, is one of the foundational works of existentialism. This work reveals the nothingness of human existence, the illusory nature of being, or, as it is also said, the alienation of the self. The book consists of two parts: the first is psychological, and the second is dogmatic. The first part deals with the human dimension, while the second concerns itself with the measure of man in relation to God.
