The diversity of churches characterizes Christianity with its two-thousand-year history, often marked by the emergence of new denominations in sharp contrast to the old ones. However, in this history of divisions and controversies, there has always been an internal striving towards unity. The cooperation among Christian churches from the early 20th century to the present day can be referred to as the age of unity, or the ecumenical movement, par excellence.

"Documenta oecumenica" contains important translations of original texts into the Estonian language, which can be used to trace the stages of self-understanding, mutual understanding among churches, their relationship with society, and their mission. Introductory chapters and a "Brief History of the Ecumenical Movement" provide explanatory background information on the origins of these documents.
