Atko-Meeme Viru (born in 1932) spent his childhood and youth in Viljandi. The events and aftermath of the Second World War hurt the family of the Estonian Defense Forces officer - the mother had to raise three sons alone. After graduating from Viljandi II secondary school, Atko Viru entered the Faculty of Physical Education of the University of Tartu in 1963. received the protected degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences. His research work on sports physiology is known and appreciated worldwide. During his tenure as dean of the Faculty of Physical Education at TRÜ, he organized the training of coaches on new scientific bases and revitalized the development of sports sciences in every way. Participation in the activities of the Estonian Olympic Committee and the Estonian Olympic Academy speaks of commitment to the promotion of Estonian sports life and public health.
