The novel is a populist and partisan village fresco. In 1814, the Allies defeated Napoleon and entered France, notably by crossing the Rhine. Resistance to the oppressor is organized in the Vosges, where the armies have more difficulty passing through. And, in fact, this resistance achieves some success. Made up of fierce villagers, bandits and poachers, organized and patriotic enough to be able to carry out actions (with little cost in terms of men), these armed groups pose some problems to the invaders. But the betrayal of the Mad Yégof will lead the resistance to its downfall.
