This book contains the authors' travel impressions and observations from Austria and the Netherlands. Both countries are, in their own way, situated at the crossroads of Europe. One is traversed by land routes from east to west and north to south; the other serves as a hub for Western European sea routes. Both are industrially developed small nations where the technology-heavy modern age carves its path through established ways of life, and social progress cannot always keep pace with technical development.
Naturally, when speaking of countries with such prominent cultural heritage and a grand past, one cannot leave history unmentioned. Yet, history has not been the authors' primary focus; instead, they highlight contemporary life at these European crossroads and the people who live within it.
The travelogue bears the stamp of its era; the text reflects the often ironic attitude of a Soviet person toward Western society and its people.
