GITIS – Государственный институт театрального искусства им. А. В. Луначарского; the A. V. Lunacharsky State Institute of Theatre Arts (today the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts) traces its origins to 22 September 1878, when a School of Music and Drama was established. In 1922, it was reorganized into a state theatre institute. The institution bore the name GITIS from 1934 onward. It trained directors and actors for musical and spoken theatre, theatre scholars, ballet masters, and ballet pedagogues.

The Estonian Studio of GITIS operated in Moscow from 1948 to 1953. Graduates of the Estonian Studio of GITIS were assigned as actors to the V. Kingissepa nimeline Tallinna Riiklik Draamateater; these included Ervin Abel, Lembit Anton, Virve Aruoja, Leili Bluumer, Ben Drui, Ita Ever, Endla Hermann, Erich Jaansoo, Tõnis Kask, Kalju Karask, Harry Karro, Kaljo Kiisk, Virve Kiple, Olev Kitsas, Grigori Kromanov, Arvo Kruusement, Aasa Käsi, Silvia Laidla, Asta Lott, Aksel Orav, Jaanus Orgulas, Ellu Puudist, Vello Rummo, and Karin Sepre.
