Concern for nature has grown alongside the expansion of human economic activity. At the beginning of the last century, people in Estonia began worrying about the fate of ancient trees, large glacial erratics, and bird-rich coastal bays. A little later, attention also turned to forests, ecosystems, and landscapes. Initially, the preservation of the environment was carried out by responsible landowners, teachers, and foresters. Systematic state-level action was achieved with the adoption of the Nature Conservation Act in 1935. The book provides an overview of the creation of this legislation and the achievements of Estonian nature conservation during the pre-war period.
