For centuries, we have enjoyed and benefited from a clean and productive sea. Until recently, we believed that the sea was vast and could endlessly absorb all our waste.

The situation is now exceptionally serious as a result of decades of reckless pollution. Coastal waters are saturated with nitrogen and phosphorus, toxic algae bloom in summer, and fish and seals are affected by PCBs and other toxic, persistent substances.
This book tells the story of what has happened to the Baltic Sea and explores ways to reduce its pollution and save the sea from destruction.
