The basis of the first book in the Free Academy book series is the astronomy lectures held at the Free Academy.
"Nowadays, it is no longer enough to describe celestial bodies if an astronomer sits next to a telescope, looks at the eyepiece with the naked eye and writes or draws what he sees in the telescope. In order to observe the celestial bodies, a very complex technique must be used, but even this is not enough, because we only get a series of numbers from the observation. In order to understand what these numbers mean, it is often necessary to resort to theoretical physics. And if we want to know the past or future of celestial bodies or even the entire Universe, we have to deal with mathematical and physical modeling of the objects under study, because the human life span is far too short to determine, for example, the evolution of the stars by observations. At the same time, evolution can sometimes be too stormy, for example in supernovae.
All of this makes it difficult for the non-astronomer to understand modern astronomy. The book was written with the aim of making it easier to understand heavenly processes.»
