The era of the Estonian book began with the catechism in the Estonian language. The transition to a new period is marked by the first theological work in Estonian produced within the activities of the Estonian university, a work that demonstrates its independence in its approach to scholarship produced abroad in the same field.

The work deliberately bears the title General Psychology of Religion. For alongside it belong various particular branches—confessional, national, social, and professional. This classification, which has ample parallels in academic scholarship, does not reduce the present work to an abstraction or a mere compendium. While providing an overview and taking a critical position, it nevertheless remains, with good reason, on a more general level, and thus hopes to prove useful.
