This book is the first comprehensive study of the place of the eucharist in the Tractarian, or Oxford Movement in the Church of England. It is based not only on the printed works of the leaders (Newman, Keble, Froude, Pusey, and others), but also on important unprinted sources, such as a series of early Newman sermons [published 1992-94]. The eucharistic theology and the liturgical ideals of the Tractarians are analysed in relation to their understanding of the Church as the sacramental system. It provides a background against which to view the later "Ritualist" Movement.
