Psychology reached Tartu in 1634 with Nicolaus Prytz’s disputation on the human soul. Although Estonia’s geographical location might suggest a peripheral position in the history of psychology, this book demonstrates for the first time that many significant developments in world psychology have, in one way or another, originated in, been stimulated by, or been influenced from here. Over nearly four centuries, several major figures in the history of psychology - Volkmann, Kraepelin, Köhler, Külpe, Tulving, Panksepp, Näätänen, and others - have been connected with Estonia. When Estonia regained its independence, the psychology conducted here had gone largely unnoticed internationally. In the thirty years since, Estonian psychology, together with the rest of Estonian science, has caught up with the wider world and in several fields now helps to set the directions for future development.
