Johan Jans (1880-1941) was one of the most important socialists of Estonia's first period of independence. With a rich life experience (military service in the Russian army, work as a telegrapher and journalist), Jans was active in the political life of his time, starting university studies at the age of 31 and graduating as a lawyer from the University of Tartu in 1915. In the spring of 1917, he became one of the founders and a member of the executive board of the Estonian Social Democratic Workers' Party. During Estonia's first period of independence, Johan Jans became a member of the Estonian parliament, a lawyer and director of the Estonian Country Bank. This book is based on the first edition (1940) and the author's manuscript. Paragraphs that did not pass censorship the last time have been restored. As was the case with many authors of the time, Jansi's memoirs were left unfinished, and there was no second volume. The last pages of this book describe the beginning of the Estonian War of Independence.
