One of the most crucial milestones in the restoration of Estonian independence was the cessation of the activities of the Soviet repressive organ, the KGB, in Estonia. This has been investigated by three parliamentary committees, and much was written about it in the press at the time. However, to this day, we do not have a comprehensive overview of the events of that time or the role and responsibility of those who liquidated the KGB office.
While all other Soviet institutions ceased operations abruptly in August 1991, the closure of the local KGB office proved to be a prolonged and arduous process, the details of which are still unclear. At the same time, spy stories involving agents of the eastern neighbor in Estonian security agencies demonstrate that decisions made in closing the local KGB continue to impact the Estonian state.
Harri Mägi (1955–2012), an advisor to the special committees of the Riigikogu that investigated the activities of the ESSR KGB and its termination, seeks clarity in this book with the support of rich source material. He delves into why the liquidation commission did not take over all the important archives and documents for Estonia and why we still lack a proper overview of the liquidation of the KGB and the work of this commission
