George Berkeley's "Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous" was published in London. The latter, the spiritual friend, championed Berkeley's ontological principle that nothing exists except thinking beings and ideas "in the mind": existence is perceived (percipi) or perceived (percipere). Hylas is of the opinion that Locke's epistemology was the inspiration. Both dialogue partners agree that philosophical beliefs from which skeptical consequences can be derived disprove themselves, and consequently everyone tries to prove that opposing views have the same consequences.
