Charles Taylor is one of the most respected contemporary philosophers in the English-speaking world, who, like Richard Rorty or the late Isaiah Berlin, has made his voice heard far beyond the walls of academia. His most remarkable talent lies in the mutual mediation and interpretation of different traditions, cultures, and modes of philosophizing. As a philosopher who transcends cultural boundaries, he has also found a wide audience in the German- and French-speaking worlds. At the heart of Taylor’s philosophy is an effort to make sense of modernity—its prevailing mindsets and plurality of perspectives—within the framework of a general philosophical anthropology. Yet, an undertaking of such grandeur cannot bypass other branches of philosophy, and thus, alongside moral and political philosophy, Taylor has made significant contributions to the philosophy of mind, language, action, epistemology, and history.
