No culture survives unless its inner DNA is passed down through time. However, one of the most important guarantees of cultural permanence is borrowing, processing and creating new ones based on old works.

American jurist Lawrence Lessig's classic work "Free Culture" describes how the balance between the free and restricted part of culture has become more and more upset over the last century under the influence of business interests, as creative freedom is curtailed under the guise of protecting creators. The Internet made everyone a potential creator and publisher, further accelerating the process. Although the author's analysis of the causes and consequences of the retreat of free culture was completed more than a decade ago in the USA, we can see everything described in today's Europe and Estonia as well. However, Lessig does not limit himself to describing the problem, but also proposes a set of solutions to protect and promote a free culture.
