August Topman was one of the last so-called Representatives of the St. Petersburg school in Estonian music. The students of the St. Petersburg Conservatory - starting with J. Kappel and ending with H. Eller - were the ones who laid the foundation for professional music in Estonia. This generation has left an indelible mark on our music history with their creations, interpretative, and especially pedagogical activities.
