In the spring of 1999, war broke out in Europe. When Yugoslavia attacked its own citizens in Kosovo, the US and other NATO members came to their defense. It was a modern war: limited in scope and every step carefully considered, both in terms of military and political consequence. At the end of the war, after ten weeks of airstrikes, the Yugoslav army withdrew from Kosovo and the Kosovar Albanians were allowed to return to their homes. For them, this war was one step on a long road that ended on February 17, 2008 with the declaration of the country's independence. It is noteworthy that not a single NATO soldier died in the battle.

General Wesley K. Clark was one of the leaders of this mighty military effort. In his book, he describes the difficulties encountered in reconciling diplomacy and military strategy, as well as the internal struggles of the NATO member states that participated in the war. Clark helps us better understand the behind-the-scenes of the decisions, vividly showing the contradictions among the NATO member states and the violence of the United States government agencies.
