Jakob Hurt, a prominent figure in the Estonian national movement, was married to Eugenie Oettel, a German woman of Swiss origin. Within the family, correspondence was conducted mainly in German. This correspondence has now been translated into Estonian. It offers readers a glimpse primarily into the relationships and domestic life of the Hurts, as well as some of their friends and relatives, during the years 1866–1917.

At the end of the book, in the appendix, there is an overview of how this correspondence has been preserved and passed down to the present day.
