Published in 1973, The Pleasure of the Text is one of the most famous works of the late French semiotician and literary theorist Roland Barthes (1915-1980).

Abandoning the systematic textual studies that had previously interested him, Barthes is interested in the processes of meaning-making, the mechanisms that give birth to meanings in a text. His main focus is on the text as a 'source of pleasure', on the reader's physical and immediate relationship with the literary work. In his poetically written text, Barthes, among other things, draws the famous distinction between the coherent and easy-to-read 'readerly text' and the continuous and complex 'writerly text'.
