Until recently the study of the grammatical structure of Estonian has been largely Estocentric. Several branches of grammar have seen the establishment of local traditions that are not fully compatible with the grammatical conceptions that are spread elsewhere. Moreover, the majority of research conceming Estonian has been written in Estonian. These circumstances have brought about a situation where data about Estonian are scarce in contemporary typological studies. The present collection opens a series of studies with the purpose of making the grammatical
description of Estonian ‘convertible’ We hope that both typology and the study of Estonian will benefit from this approach.
