The Legal Lexicon (Õigusleksikon) is the first comprehensive explanatory dictionary of legal terms published in the Republic of Estonia. The dictionary provides clear and accurate definitions for over 5,000 legal terms, primarily as they appear in the legislative acts of the Republic of Estonia and the works of prominent legal scholars. As such, the lexicon is descriptive rather than analytical. It does not introduce new meanings to terms and concepts; instead, it is designed to help users understand and interpret legal texts, given that the actual and direct meaning of legal concepts can only derive from valid legislation. For this reason, the compilers recommend using this book alongside actual legislative texts. The dictionary is intended for use by all citizens. The compilation was based on works covering the legal theories of Estonia, Germany, ancient Rome, and other nations, as well as legislative acts of the Republic of Estonia, rulings of the Supreme Court, and various other sources.
