This book examines the generation that was born immediately after the war and was in their forties during Estonia's re-independence. Our analyses describe the lives of people in a society where the rules of the game were significantly different from those in today's Estonia. Although the state controlled certain indicators to achieve the declared goals of communist ideology, it could not direct the processes as a whole. Despite the egalitarian policies, entrepreneurship and personal choices helped shape the individual life paths of the generation studied.
