The Winter War, fought from 30 November 1939 to 13 March 1940, ended in a formal Soviet victory but inflicted heavy losses on the Red Army and exposed its weaknesses. The conflict reinforced Hitler’s belief that the Soviet Union was militarily vulnerable and hastened his decision to invade the USSR in 1941. Although peace brought joy to many families whose loved ones returned home, it was overshadowed by immense human losses and the realization that an even more devastating war against Nazi Germany lay ahead.
