"The Histories" is a foundational work written by the Ancient Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th century BC, widely considered the first true work of history in Western literature.

The book primarily focuses on the causes and events of the Greco-Persian Wars, but it is also famous for its extensive ethnographic and geographical descriptions of the diverse peoples and cultures of the known world at the time. Because Herodotus was the first to systematically collect his materials, test their accuracy to a certain extent, and arrange them in a well-constructed narrative, he is traditionally known as the "Father of History."
