A summer day in the life of Juutas Käkriäinen, a crofter, the "god of Putkinotko", his family and his creatures. The hot day is spent doing various chores, but mainly planning. The fundamental conflict in Käkriäinen's life arises from the fact that the Putkinotko he lives in is owned by bookseller Aapeli Muttinen, a city dweller and aesthete. This conflict is visible in everything Käkriäinen does - or does not do - and ultimately leads to a violent confrontation. Originally published in 1919-20, the novel offers its own explanation for the reasons that led to the events of 1918.
