Vana kannel. XII, Vaivara ja Narva regilaulud

Volume XII of Vana Kannel contains runo-songs collected from the eastern corner of Estonia—from Vaivara parish and the town of Narva. The 1,525 song texts published in this book transport us back to a once-populous region where the old runo-songs were still well-remembered and, in some places, even in daily use. These songs reflect the life of our ancestors from the cradle to the grave; everyday themes are juxtaposed with a world of miracles and fantasy, as well as poetic depictions of singing and the singer themselves. The introductory chapters of the edition provide an overview of the history of Vaivara parish and the town of Narva, the dialect of the runo-songs, the collectors, the singers, and the traditional melodies.
