Text in Estonian and English.
Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald (1803-1882), a leading figure in Estonian national culture and a compiler of the national epic Kalevipoeg (´Son of
Kalev´) spent all the holidays of his student years in his parents´ and place of work and dwelling in Viisu, Peetri parish, Järva County. Decades later he has reminisced that the brightest moments of the Sturm und Drang of his youth passed in Paide, centre of Järva County, socializing with the local intellectuals. Grand men of the era - Herder, Knüpffer, Faehlmann - awoke interest in folklore in young Kreutzwald. From around the Viisu Manor, Kreutzwald wrote down 28 runo-songs (regilaul), which he used extensively while compiling Kalevipoeg. Kreutzwald was fortunate to have heard living regilaul in its genuine performance environment. The songs were very likely recorded from young women at the swinging ground.
