"The 'Third Mountains' is a historical narrative about the first academically educated Estonian painter Johann Köler (1826–1899) and his apse painting of Christ created for St. Charles' Church in Tallinn in 1879. Alongside Köler, another significant figure is the landowner Rudolf von Gernet, whose letter provides new impetus for Köler's internal struggles. Von Gernet writes that the nature of the man who posed as a model is too contradictory to that of Christ, and therefore it becomes an adversary with whom Köler must engage in a conceptual dialogue."
