Camille Claudel (1864-1943) was a famous French sculptor Auguste Rodin's student, assistant, collaborator, model, muse, and long-term mistress. She became known through Rodin, as who would have believed in 19th century France that a woman could become a true sculptor? Camille’s fate turned out to be tragic. Rodin exploited her talents and ideas, and she had to spend thirty years confined to a mental institution. There, her unusual brother, Paul Claudel - who later became a member of the French Academy and gained fame as a writer - sent her. Nevertheless, Camille is still remembered today; especially recently, interest in her has once again surged.
