Under the Yoke is a dramatically tense work from the Bulgarian Awakening, the first Bulgarian historical novel. Accordingly, there is plenty of romance and suspense. However, the underlying tone remains realistic, surprising in places with its forcefulness. The author is particularly convincing in the images of the uprising. There is more depth than expected in the ending, which goes some way to compensating for the shortcomings.
