Soldiers of Salamis (Soldados de Salamina, 2001) is a breakthrough novel by Javier Cercas, which opened the way for Spanish literature to reflect the long-suppressed wounds of war and has found its place among the most influential works of recent decades. The axis of the novel is the story of the poet Rafael Sánchez Mazas, one of the creators of the ideology that ultimately led the country to fratricide, especially a dramatic episode from the last days of the civil war, when he miraculously managed to escape from being shot and later survive thanks to the human help of simple soldier boys belonging to the enemy camp.
