A novel with autobiographical lines by Herman Kant, a famous writer of the German Democratic Republic, whose protagonist, Mark Niebuhr from a small town in Friesland, ends up at the front for a month at the end of the war and then a prisoner of war. A longer stay in a pre-trial prison, where the main character comes into contact with people of different nationalities and beliefs, shapes his worldview and attitude towards life.
