The action of the historical novel based on real life by the German writer Werner Bergengruen, who was born in Riga, takes place in Berlin in 1525. The court astrologer of Elector Joachim of Brandenburg has predicted a devastating flood for St. Henry's Day. The Elector's desperate attempt to keep the impending disaster a secret at all costs will be fatal for many and bring severe trials to the entire city. The subjugation of the small fraternity of the people from the Germans to the power of the lords runs through the novel as a gloomy nostalgic line.
