The fourth part depicts man's struggle with himself. Through the profound dialogues and confessions of the characters, the reader can glimpse into their consciousness and soul.
Corruption, black deals and the satisfaction of personal passions are rampant in the elite society of the Republic of Estonia, who became rich during the First World War. In such an atmosphere, Indrek fights hard for himself and his happiness.
Indrek's wife Karin's character has similarities with that of Tammsaare's wife Käthe Hansen, and the work is in fact dedicated to Käthe.
Some critics rate Book IV of "Tõde ja õigus" as the best part after Part I, some have even considered it the best part of the entire cycle of novels.
