Born in Võrumaa, Karl Gailit followed in the footsteps of his uncle, August Gailit, a war correspondent during the First World War. In 1943, he left the University of Tartu to attend war correspondent courses in Berlin and went through all stages of the war as a front-line reporter with the 20th Estonian Division, in the inferno of the Czech front, and later in Siberia.
