Much has been written about social life in Estonian cultural history, and yet it is still a fascinating and by no means exhausted topic. Societies have been very important to Estonians precisely because we often have had no other institutions through which to express our national will to remain in this harsh Nordic land, to speak our native language and create in our native language, and to cherish our homeland.
