The book provides an overview of the Estonian War of Independence (1918—1920). It introduces the Cross of Freedom, which is the first and most honorable national award of the Estonian state, and the attempts to erect a monument to the War of Independence in 1920—2007. The most extensive chapter discusses, with the support of abundant photographic material, the story of the erection of the Victory Monument of the War of Independence, which was ceremonially opened on the slope of Harjumäe on Victory Day in 2009. The book also includes a list of people and organizations that supported the construction of the monument with donations.
