The city of Tapa is one of the most important railway junctions of the Estonian SSR. Tallinn is located 77 km from here, Tartu 112 km and Narva 133 km away. The Rakvere-Paide highway passes through the city, and roads to Jäneda, Loobus and Koigi depart from here, and also to Porkun and Tamsallu near the city. The clear-water Valgejõgi River flows along the eastern border of the city.

In 1976, one hundred years passed since the completion of the first railway station in Tapa and fifty years since the settlement was granted city rights.
