The creation of any new museum, especially if it is a central museum, is a cultural event. The open-air museum is not one of the oldest museums in Estonia, but the idea that arose at the beginning of the century gathered strength during the interwar period and was soon to be realized. Perhaps the fact that this idea was not realized before the occupation of the Republic of Estonia was merely a coincidence of unfavorable circumstances. At the same time, however, one must appreciate the impetus that the intention of creating an open-air museum gave to the scientific study of Estonian farm architecture. In this way, the importance of the Estonian Open Air Museum can be viewed in a much broader context than just 1957. recognition of the act of incorporation.

A summary of the idea of creating the Estonian Open Air Museum and the first twenty years of the museum's activity was first published in 1976. in the collection "Suitsutare". The time of publication of this collection was politically unfavorable for a comprehensive treatment of the range of problems related to the creation of an open-air museum.

Therefore, this collection is a corrected and supplemented edition of the relevant articles published in Suitsutares. The authors of the articles have relied on documentary material.
