The novel describes the life of the protagonist, Sebastian Alkman, a member of the Young Estonia movement, as a refugee in Europe in 1906-1917, through his own accounts. The longest stops during his years as a refugee were Helsinki, Stockholm, Paris, London and Vienna, and for several summers Åland, but his travels also took him to Greece, Italy and Spain. He spends the years of the Great War in Finland, until the February Revolution allows him to return home.
The surviving accounts of the young Alkman were put together in manuscript by the man himself, during his second stay in the Åland Islands in 1960.
