Emmanuil Kazakevich (b. 1913) devoted himself to literature after taking part in the Great Patriotic War. He published a number of stories and novels: «Täht», «Kevad Oderil», «Kahekesi stepis», «Sõbra süda», «Vanad tuttavad», «Maja väljaku ääres» and «Sinine vihik».

The story «Päevavalgel» was published in 1961.

Its protagonist, Andrei Sleptsov, a former soldier who lost his arm in the war, arrives in Moscow after the war to fulfill a promise he made to his fallen commander - to deliver keepsakes to the commander’s widow.
