The thematic richness and psychological depth of Sara Lidman’s writing have attracted widespread attention in Sweden.
Sara Lidman’s fifth work, Me and My Son, differs from her earlier books, although here too a central role is played by an “exceptional individual” who defies the conventions of his environment, embodied in the first-person protagonist, a seeker of happiness with a distorted soul. The difference lies primarily in the novel’s more active social stance and in a certain journalistic quality that the subject matter itself imposed upon the author.
The novel is based on direct personal experiences. In 1960, the writer visited the Republic of South Africa and, through her contacts with Africans, came into conflict with the country’s racist laws. As a result, she was brought before the courts.
