Sigurd Hoel (1890–1960) was an outstanding representative of Norwegian literature. Having begun his career as a journalist, critic, and short-story writer, he gained fame with his sensational novel Sinners in the Summer Sun, published in 1927, which provoked condemnation from church authorities. It is one of the author's most interesting works. Structurally, the novel resembles a mathematical investigation: starting from a set of given premises, it develops a consistent chain of events based on those premises, culminating in a sharply pointed twist ending. On no single page can one find the slightest revelations that would suggest the author's contribution to the creation of the work exceeds that of a careful constructor.
